CLOTHES SHOW LIVE

I went to Clothes Show live in Birmingham to do some research. Me and my group thought a good scene in the trailer can be a clip of my character (Eve) to be surrounded by images of clothes and makeup brands she fantasies about. I went to clothes show to get some inspiration and takes some pictures for our trailer. We also looked at photographers such as Tim Walker. This was to add to the amount of pictures we have to make the scene look more realistic. Theodore Adorno's theory is all about false needs and the culture industries.

IN - DESIGN

These designs are created in, In Design. I liked using a different software instead of just photoshop. It has alot of techniques and cool styles that I can use for my poster. We had a really productive lesson on learning how to use this and I am excited to create my poster through this software.

PLANNING POSTER

In order to create a really good film poster we wanted to analyse another professional real poster 'The Book Of Eli' This allowed us to look at what we needed to include in the institutional information. Freddie found a font that looked a perfect match to the writing on the poster, so we as a group decided on who did what and put the names down in the best order we could.

We had to look at the codes and conventions of a film poster. In a poster there is a lot to analyse. things like

- Title
- Colours
- Key actors
- Tag lines
- The release date
- Rating of film

In a past post I have analysed 2 posters in great detail to make sure I fully understand the codes and conventions that needs to be put into consideration when designing a poster.

This is the poster I am going to edit in In Design.

CONSTRUCTION: EQUIPMENT

As a group we have large variety of equipment to use to achieve the best results from our filming. The equipment we have been using includes:

- Nikon D5200
- Nikon DX 35mm Prime Lens
- Røde VideoMic Pro
- A GorillaPod Flexible Tripod
- On camera light system

All of this equipment is very lightweight and easy to transport, this really helps when it comest to filming out in the streets. The microphone is probably the best piece of equipment we have because it improves our project the most. In my opinion having good sound is as important possibly even more important than having good image quality. The GorillaPod is incredibly handy for when we need to do low angle shots as it is very small and can be placed in any position you can image and saves us from having to lay down in the dirt to get the shot we need.

FILM POSTER ANALYSIS

Doing a poster analysis is really useful because it means when I create my poster I can make sure it is the best it can be, using all these things I have noticed in the posters. Using these titles should mean i consider all these things when creating my poster.

TREATMENT GOOGLE DOCS

This a link to get into google docs to see our treatment.

Google docs is useful as you can constantly change the document collectively with my group. We can see who has changed what, as the cursor on the page will appear as a different colour for different people.

CONSTRUCTION AND PLANNING

Over the half term me and my group decided to make a start on the filming. We wanted a romantic location that was suitable to walk a dog in, and the rest we would improvise. We all decide on busy park as this was a close location for all of us and it had things like lakes, deer and romantic scenes for dog walks.

When we got there it was a really sunny day and made perfect shots. We did a lot of different types of romantic scenes like: sitting by the river, dog walks, playing around with the go pro. They all seemed to make good, useful scenes and I am really pleased with this location.

We are currently deciding on the next few locations and planning ahead so hopefully we can get the same great results as last time.

TRELLO

I created this Trello to help my planning throughout this process of making my trailer. This is a great source of planning a you can move things across when you are doing them and once they are done

PLANNING: TREATMENT

For Frank Ash, Creative Consultant who has taught storytelling and creativity techniques to teams across the BBC, it is important to focus on the audience: what will interest the audience? How will the narrative develop.

  • Think about your favourite book or film or any ‘good story’ you recently watched online, could you sum up its narrative into ‘one elegant sentence’ to provide its ‘topline’?
  • What was its big story question, and how important was it to your appreciation of the text?
Thanks for the presentation to The University of Birmingham and FutureLearn:

We will aim to define in the treatment of our trailer:

The top-line:  A boy and a girl have a happy loving relationship but it takes a turn for the worst when we realise

The big question: Does something tragic happen to the relationship? what caused this unhappiness?

RESEARCH: AUDIENCE

AUDIENCE: A KEY CONCEPT

All media texts are produced with the audience always in mind. these are the sort of people who will be watching the films or trailers, and who this is going to be directed towards as they are the ones making a purchase and buying the text.

There is a lot to think about when knowing who exactly is your target audience. Are they under 20 years old or older, mainly male or mainly female, what are they interested in? The television audience changes a lot through the day and night, so this effects when you will screen your media. If it is at night a older audience will most probably be watching as the younger kids have gone to sleep. This is where audience research becomes important. A media producer has to know who is the potential audience, and as much about them as possible to get them to enjoy whatever media they are watching the most.

TYPES OF AUDIENCE RESEARCH:

Audience profiling such as

socioeconomics,demographics,

psychographics.

Producers need to know the demographics of their potential audience so that they can shape their text or product to appeal to a group with known viewing habits.
This is not a complete picture. It doesn't tell the media producers some things they would like to know, such as how much money each group has to spend each week so then they can direct the media towards them as they spend the most money. Some skilled manual workers, like electricians, earn more money each week than say a teacher, but they probably do not spend it in the same way. Also demographics is only about the main earner in a household so young people at home.

This is a way of describing an audience by looking at the behaviour and personality traits of its members. Psychographics labels a particular type of person and makes an assessment about their viewing and spending habits.

EXIT POLLS

The BFI carries out exit polls to assess audience response at film screenings. Here are some examples I made on Piktochart.

2 STEP FLOW

Katz and Lazarsfeld assumes a slightly more active audience. It suggests messages from the media move in two distinct ways.

RESEARCH: JURASSIC WORLD MARKETING CAMPAIGN

Trailers are part of a marketing strategy that includes outdoor media. Decisions are made early on about when campaigns start and end. They try to see what innovative formats can make the release stand out.

The trailer is just one part in the publicity campaign.

Marketing
Digital
Promotions
Sales
Technical
Publicity
Trade team

These are all things the film producers need to consider when making a film. The Trailer is just one part of the marketing campaign.

Jurassic world research knew there where certain motivators like people getting intrigued by large dinosaurs at London Waterloo, this would interest people and get them to want to know what this is about and why these dinosaurs are there. They knew that thrilling adventures would get people involved. Children could get scared by the general theme of the film which could put adults off from taking there young children, so the producers need to get the balance right as they don't want to put anyone off, but they want to attract an older such as a younger audience.

The plan was to take people back to the old Jurassic park and remind people that dinosaurs can still be cool. Wanting to have the old audience is important but attracting new audiences is equally important. They had to make the film

The film got more coverage and mention than a premier would.

I studied the UK tv spot directed by Colin Trevorrow. duration 60 second released 7th may 2016:

The first words of the trailer is giving the dinosaur a name which is an attempt to humanise the dinosaur.

How do we know the audience will like this jurassic park as much as the old one: Some parts of the trailer looked familiar as there were attractive characters. also seemed to have the same dinosaurs. Steven Spielberg directed the last Jurassic park films so the people who liked the old ones know who he is, and will assume he will create an as good film as his old ones.

Innovative: New technology to travel through the park in glass pod. This will appeal to new audiences and younger boys and girls who would think that travelling around a dinosaur enclosure would be really cool. New giant dinosaur which is smarter quicker and scarier is exciting for the audience and is something different from the old one. Also some clips from the film include the actors talking about intelligent animals who can communicate, which is a new exciting idea. Taking clips of dialog between actors will be something the old trailer didn't do.

PLANNING: INITIAL IDEAS

This is our mind map of the initial ideas we have for the film. The ideas we have now are all about a girl and a boy being happy and in love, but throughout the trailer and short clips we see the arguments start coming in. During the end of the film we can see that the boyfriend has been abusing the girlfriend.

Trailer

I found it really useful too make my own trailer as it showed me that it isnt that easy to just put together clips in random orders.

Quiz

I also did a short quiz on trailers which I really enjoyed and made me think more about trailers and why producers put certain things in certain places.

TRELLO

This is a Trello. This is really helpful when planning your work and seeing what is done and what you need to do.

CAMERA ANGLES WE COULD USE

I took these screenshots from the Youtube stars video, (Jay Alvares and Alexis Ren). This was helpful to get some camera angles that we can use when making our film. They all show a happy, fun and loving lifestyle which is what we wanted to get across in our film.

BRIEF

We have chosen to complete Brief 2 a promotion package for a new film, to include a teaser trailer, together with:

  • A film magazine front cover, featuring the film
  • A poster for the film                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               We originally were planning on doing a short film, hence the research into short films below. However, we decided our idea would work more effectively as a short film as we felt we couldn't cram our entire story into just a short space of time. However, I did feel that the research I put in was good enough  which is why I have decided to keep the previous work on short films.

originally we decided we wanted to do a short film so that is why some of my blog work includes short film work. But as a group we decided we wanted to change to a trailer as we thought suit the film much better.
